Want to help MS/HS singers stay on-task in the choral room (and reduce disruptive behavior)? Increasing singers’ level of physical activity improves memory, attention, and concentration. Experiencing appropriate social interactions builds teamwork as well as negotiation and leadership skills. MS/HS musicians will find more success in their structured activities if they are given the opportunity to exert energy in an appropriate way within a rehearsal. After all, they are still kids.
About the Clinician
Bethany Houff has been the choral director at Harrisonburg High School in Virginia since 2003. In addition to conducting four choral ensembles, she teaches an introductory musical theatre class and served on the design team of the innovative Harrisonburg High School Fine Arts Academy, where colleagues in dance, drama, music, visual art, and creative writing teach collaboratively in a sequential and integrated arts curriculum. Beth received a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting and Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from James Madison University. She serves the Organization of American Kodály Educators as a member of the Secondary Choral Committee and spends her summers teaching in the Kodály Institutes at Indiana University and Southern Methodist University.

Campus Directions: From I-81, follow Jubal Early Drive, to Millwood Avenue. Enter campus turning right between the red brick columns. Take the first right, the Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre will be on the left. Continue to the side lot on the left. The entrance to Ruebush Hall faces the creek and the rest of campus. Parking is available in the side lot or in front of the theatre. We meet in room 128, which will be to the right from the Ruebush lobby area. There will be signs to help guide everyone.
